Oldies but goodies!

Just about every Flight Attendant has seen these jokes as they've made their way around the Internet. Just in case you haven't...here's a little humorous taste of our lives:

So, You Want to Be a Flight Attendant?

1. Go to a resale store and find an old, navy blue suit that an army sergeant might have worn. Add a white shirt and a tie. Wear the same outfit for three consecutive days.

2. Go to an airport and watch airplanes take off for several hours. Pretend you are standing by for a flight and they are all full. Go home. Return to the airport the next day and do the same thing again.

3. Fill several large boxes with rocks. Lift them over your head and place them on the top shelf of a closet. Slam the door shut until the boxes fit. Do this until you feel a disk slip in your back.

4. Turn on a radio. Be sure to set it between stations so there is plenty of static. Turn on the vacuum cleaner and garbage disposal. Run them all night.

5. Remove the covers from several TV entrees. Place them in a hot oven. Leave the food in the oven until it’s completely dried out. Remove the hot trays with your bare hands. Serve to your family. Don’t include anything for yourself.

6. Serve your family a beverage one hour after they’ve received their meal. Make them remain in their seats during this time. Ask them to scream at you and complain about the service.

7. Scrounge uneaten rolls off the plates for you to eat two hours later when you’re really hungry.

8. Place a straight-backed chair in a closet facing a blank wall. Use a belt to strap yourself into it. Eat the rolls you saved from your family’s meal.

9. Ask your family to use the bathroom as frequently as possible. Tell them to make splashing water a game and see who can leave the most disgusting mess. Clean the bathroom every hour throughout the night.

10. Make a narrow aisle between several dining room chairs and randomly scatter your husband’s wing-tips and loafers along the way. Turn off the lights and spend the night walking up and down the aisle while banging your shins against the chair legs and tripping over the shoes. Drink several cups of cold coffee to keep yourself awake.

11. Gently wake your family in the morning and serve them a cold sweet roll. Don’t forget to smile and wish them a nice day when they leave for work and school.

12. After the family leaves, take a suitcase and go out in the yard. If it’s not raining, turn on the sprinkling system and stand in the cold for 30 minutes pretending like you’re waiting for the crew bus to pick you up. Then go inside and wait by your bedroom door for another 30 minutes for an imaginary maid to make up your room.

13. Change into street clothes and shop for five hours. Pick up carryout food from a local deli. Go back home. Sit on your bed and eat your meal. Set your alarm for 3 a.m. so you’ll be ready for your wake-up call.

14. Repeat the above schedule for three days in a row and you’ll be ready to work your first trip as a Flight Attendant.

You Know You're a Flight Attendant if....

1. You can eat a 4 course meal standing at the kitchen counter.

2. You search for a button to flush the toilet.

3. You look for the "crew line" at the grocery store.

4. You can pack for a 2 week trip to Europe in 1 roll-aboard.

5. All of your pens have different hotel names on them.

6. You NEVER unpack.

7. You can recognize pilots by the backs of their heads-but not by their faces.

8. You can tell from 70 yards away if a piece of luggage will fit in the overhead bin.

9. You care about the local news in a city three states away.

10. You can tie a neck scarf 36 ways.

11. You know at least 25 uses for air sickness bags-none of which pertain to vomit.

12. You understand and actually use the 24-hour clock.

13. You own 2 sets of uniforms: fat and thin.

14. You don't think in "months"-you think in "bid packs" .

15. You always point with two fingers.

16. You get a little too excited by certain types of ice.

17. You stand at the front door and politely say "Buh-bye, thanks, have a nice day" when someone leaves your home.

18. You can make a sentence using all of the following phrases: "At this time...", "For your safety...", "Feel free", and "As a reminder..."

19. You know what's on the cover of the current issues of In Touch, Star, and People magazines.

20. You stop and inspect every fire extinguisher you pass, just to make sure the "gauge is in the green".

21. Your thighs are covered in bruises from armrests and elbows.

22. You wake up and have to look at the hotel stationery to figure out where you are.

23. You refer to cities by their airport codes.

24. Every time the doorbell rings you look at the ceiling.

25. You actually understand every item on this list.

Where have all the flowers gone?

When my Flight Attendant training class graduated last May 1, we had 33 people in my class. Even if you don't particularly like a person in your class, you have some sort of bond that makes you genuinely happy to see them when your paths cross. And, you are sad when you hear that one has left the job, whether it was their choice or not.

My company has a one illness in six months only while on probation policy. That meant that had I gone back to work earlier this month after my foot injury cleared up, then discovered the tumor on my ovary and had to have surgery, I would have been fired. Fortunately, it was discovered while I was already out with the foot injury.

Others have not been so fortunate. Some quit, some resigned. Some just never came back.

"K" was let go after not receiving a phone call from the Crew Desk. Her cell phone company had taken down two towers in the middle of the night for maintenance--and she did not get the call. After she found out, she even was able to get a letter from the cell phone company describing the actions that prevented her phone from working that night. Still, combined with a previous late show for work, she was let go.

"T" had been out with strep throat in June. In July, she decided to go to Toronto to a Caribbean Festival. Weather ensued, and she was stuck for three days, not being able to get home. Fortunately, she was already looking for another job and had it lined up when the airline said "bye bye" to her....

"S" just decided it wasn't for her and called out sick. And called out sick. And called out sick. And called out sick. She is probably still calling out sick--and has no intentions of ever coming back. It just wasn't for her.

"K" quit to join the Army. Yep, you heard me. She quit to join the Army. Her short stint as a Flight Attendant didn't produce the love of her life that would pay for everything for her, so she quit. I doubt seriously if she actually joined the Army, that's just what she told people.

"J" got a better paying job at Georgetown University--good for her!

"S" was trying to commute to work from Philly to Washington, DC and the flights were oversold. With no seats available, buh-bye....

"M" readily admits she just showed up at the wrong time. Told to be at work at 1845 (6:45 p.m.) ...her brain translated 18 to 8 and showed up two hours late at 8:45 p.m.

"H" just couldn't get it together and had too many sick calls.

"J" ended up getting a DUI--which made him miss a trip, and they fired him. I suppose it was because he was drinking within the time limits of the company. The good news is that he went to rehab, and had a choice to stay there or leave, and he chose to stay. He is so young, I hope this ends up being a huge wake-up call and he gets his life on the right track.

There are a couple others, but there are only 20 of us in the original class left. So, when we run into each other at the airport, it's a big deal. We have just moments to catch up with where our next trip is taking us, how our lives are, and oh, did you hear what happened to.......

I'm a Flight Attendant

Yep, I'm a Flight Attendant. I fly for a regional carrier--which isn't so regional. You can fly from New York to California on my little 70 seat airplane with only one stop--in NW Arkansas. Yep, LaGuardia to Los Angeles in a "little" plane. Hardly makes us regional, huh?

I love my job. Well, I love the lifestyle. The actual job isn't so great. After I do my safety related functions, I'm a sky waitress. Schleppin' drinks. So many people have forgotten the basics of please or thank you--it's astounds me! I prefer to work during the week, with the business flyers--who are stuck in the aluminum tube more than they want to be. My business peeps always say please or thank you.

I like the lifestyle and schedule of a flight attendant. I am not on Reserve, which means I hold a schedule and know where I'll be, on what days, and when I am going home. We bid on our schedules based on seniority. I prefer to work during the week, and mostly just want Sundays at home. For July, I was able to hold a Monday-Thursday schedule. Each week is the same "trip" starting on Mondays and ending on Thursdays.

We also have the ability to "Trip Trade." Trip Trading means we can take the trip we have and trade it for another trip we want, which can be on the same or different days. We have legalities to work around--must have 24 hours off after 6 days of working--things like that. I was able to Trip Trade my schedule so that I worked the last 10 calendar days, but had two 24 hour periods off in there. I had yesterday and today off, and start another 4 day trip tomorrow. (Sounds complicated, I know!) After that, I work another 2 day trip, and then am off for the rest of the month! I will have 13 days off in a row, having worked a full schedule the first 18 days of the month. Same paycheck, no vacation used, and almost 2 weeks off in a row.

THAT'S why I like this job!

The first few days I have off, I am going to Anchorage, Alaska.  Then come home for a couple of days...then head to San Antonio to see my Dad for a few days.

Not a bad gig, eh?
