Serving Wench Attire

Normally, our Flight Attendants wear a navy blue apron over our uniform during the beverage service. BORING! I have a cool bright pink polka dotted apron that I wear. It's a great conversation starter--and it really lifts my mood. However, it is only a half apron and the pretty pocket is basically useless...

Well, in my quest for "cute as a button" aprons, I just bought this one online! It is soooo cute! It should be here next week and it may make me want to work a lot more.
(JUST kidding! )

Update: Received the new apron--and can't wait to wear it at work! It is precious!

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy....

You download the toolbar, check off your interests, click on the button, and it "stumbles upon" websites it thinks you might be interested in. I just clicked through a bunch of pages and...well, I may never leave this computer again!

My friend, Cherie, is graduating from Flight Attendant training on Thursday, and has asked me to pin her wings on at the ceremony. The person who pins on your wings, must also have their own wings--either a pilot or a Flight Attendant. This is a real honor for me!

Cherie is old hat with this stuff--she was a Flight Attendant with TWA, which was acquired by American some years ago. She used to fly when it was more glamorous and they served meals on short haul flights, and service was elegant. She has seen a lot of changes in her time!

(Disclaimer: this is not a picture of Cherie, nor is she old enough to be in a picture like this!)

After being furloughed (laid off) she ended up flying at my regional carrier. I think it was a love-hate relationship by then. She loved her schedule and the time off her seniority allowed--even liked most people she worked with. But, hated what she has seen become of the industry.

Now, she is going back to fly the "big planes." She'll be on Reserve for the rest of her career. The way they work it there is every 3rd month the Flight Attendant is "on call" and has to go wherever Crew Scheduling sends her. She will also be based in New York City--which is a tough commute from Kansas City, where she lives. But, her pay has increased significantly, and she will end her career with a small pension--something I don't have with the Company.

(Disclaimer: this is not a picture of Cherie, nor is she young enough to be in a picture like this!)

So, Wednesday night, I am flying to Dallas, so I can pin her wings on Thursday morning. I start my next trip on Friday morning--I have a 0545 sign-in. After attending Cherie's graduation on Thursday morning, I will fly to Chicago, and get a hotel there for Thursday night, so I am in place for my oh-dark-thirty "show" time on Friday.

I'll be back home the afternoon of December 3, then will be off until December 18th. I am taking some vacation days so Norm and I can do a little traveling together.

Celebs Onboard

November 25, 2007 0 Comments A+ a-

Someone asked me about celebrities I've had onboard. The ones I know about, besides Ted Lange and Mare Winningham are:

LeeAnn Womack---and her band on a flight from Chicago (ORD) to Nashville (BNA)--very quiet, stayed to herself, she signed an autograph for my Captain.

Rodney Atkins' band--not the singer himself, but the band. Chatted with the bass player for a bit--he was really nice, and shared information about life on the road (misses his new baby) and how the band business works. I don't remember where we were or where we were going.

Ann-Margret---Traveling from Chicago (ORD) to Champaign, IL (CMI) to do a show at the University of Illinois. She was traveling under her married name (Smith) with her grouchy husband. I asked him to put his bag under the seat in front of him--and he snapped at me and said, "It's not a bag, it's a dog." (It was a pet carrier.) I said, "Okay, please put your dog under the seat in front of you..." (The rules are the same, people...no matter who you are and what you are carrying...)

Emmylou Harris---She was traveling either to Ottawa (YOW) or from Ottawa--I don't remember. I put her guitar in my closet and didn't not recognize her until she got off the plane--and then I looked at her name on the manifest, and sure enough, it was her! How could I not have known with her world famous silver hair??

Ronnie Milsap---He was coming out of Omaha (OMA) to Chicago (ORD) then onto Nashville (BNA). He slept the entire flight--it was a 6:00 am departure. He is a very sickly and frail looking man! I was shocked! He had several "handlers" with him that morning.

Zappos vs. Shoebuy

November 25, 2007 0 Comments A+ a-

I already own a pair of these shoes--love, love, love them! They are so comfortable for my big @ss feet, and easy to go through airport security with ...just slip 'em off then slip 'em back on.

Well, it is time to replace these shoes...they are getting a bit worn looking. So, I went to my favorite shoe site, Zappo's and they are $73.95. A fair price, I suppose, since they fit my huge feet, are comfortable, I wear them all the time and they look great, too. Then, I checked Shoebuy with their 20% Thanksgiving discount, I was able to buy TWO pairs of this shoe (one in black suede, the other in brown leather) for $80.98!!

God bless capitalism and the Internet!

Thanksgiving follow-up

My baby brother brought his awesome family to join us for dinner on Thursday. There were Savage ladies everywhere--and Mike! (Well, Margo was in Palm Springs for a field hockey thing...) Dinner was good--it was great to taste those things you only eat once a year--green bean casserole, Watergate salad, sausage stuffing, and Jackie's world famous sweet potato casserole. (If it isn't world famous, it oughta be!)

I asked Mike to say the blessing--this is what he said:

"Today we bow our heads in reverence...
Reverence to those who came before us, our nation's founders.
Reverence to those that brought us here, our parents.
Reverence to those that keep us safe, our service men and women.
Reverence for our partners and siblings.
Reverence to our families both here with us and those absent.
Reverence to God for this bounty before us.
God bless this food to our use, and us to your service, in Jesus' name. Amen."

He added that the last line was from the blessing our grandparent's used to say at dinner.
I thought it was perfect.

After dinner, we played some board games. 80's Trivial Pursuit--which didn't last long because apparently none of us were present in the 80's! Then we played Taboo and Catch Phrase. There was a lot of laughter in my kitchen and it was just the BEST day!

Woo-hoo! Got an excellent schedule for December. 18 days off! Of course, there was a trade-off. I bid to work Christmas Day. We do our celebration on Christmas Eve--so I don't mind working Christmas Day. I just don't like having to get up really early to fly to Chicago--but my trip starts at 3pm, so I can sleep in a bit that day.

So, here is my schedule with the overnights:

November 30-December 3:
NW Arkansas (XNA)
Indianapolis (IND)
Little Rock (LIT)

December 7-10
White Plains, NY (HPN)
Springfield, MO (SGF)
Grand Rapids, MI (GRR)
This trip I will take vacation days because Norm and I are taking off for a week. More on this later...

December 18-20
Champaign, IL (CMI)
Raleigh, NC (RDU)

December 25-26
Grand Rapids, MI (GRR)

December 31-January 2
NW Arkansas (XNA)
Bloomington, IL (BMI)

Well, this is how it all stands now. If I can trade my trip on the 7th, to work on other days, I'll do that, so I don't have to take vacation time. Then, a couple of these trips start early in the morning--too early to fly in that day, so if I can't trade them, I have to come in the night before and pay for a hotel room. And, the trips are jam packed--five legs days, followed by four leg days, followed with five legs days--which is how they Company is able to build a schedule with full time hours and lots of days off: you just have to work from sun-up to well into the evening hours--very long days. So, I'll try to trade and see what happens.

iPhone Can Fly the Plane, too!

November 21, 2007 0 Comments A+ a-

Got this e-mail today about the latest iPhone commercial:

"Oh joy! I can't wait for the next ground delay or long taxi due to weather somewhere to get a smart ass with a freakin iPhone shoving it in my face saying "It's NOT raining there... SEE !"

Too late ... already happened to me. We push back, get advised of a ground stop in MEM due to storms in the area. Go to the penalty box and wait.

My Captain does the lecture over the PA... not one minute later, we get dinged from the F/A "Some guy with an iPhone says the weather is good, and wants to know what the real reason is for the delay. Is something wrong with the plane?" I want to tell this clown what he can do with his IdiotPhone - but the Captain does it even better.

He gets on the PA and makes the following announcement : "If the passenger with the iPhone would be kind enough to use it to check the weather at our alternate, calculate our fuel burn due to being rerouted around the storms, call the dispatcher to arrange our release, and then make a phone call to the nearest Air Traffic Control center to arrange our timely departure amongst the other aircraft carrying passengers with iPhones, then we will be more than happy to depart. Please ring your call button to advise the Flight Attendant and your fellow passengers when you deem it ready and responsible for this multi-million dollar aircraft and its passengers to safely leave."

Needless to say, the pax was pretty embarrassed. The F/A later told us the rest of the plane was outright laughing at this dude. What a clown."

While I empathize with the story--not even sure if it's true--I would never put a passenger in a situation that would purposely cause embarrassment. I might talk smack about him with my crew later at the bar--but, would never knowingly call him out like this Captain did. We have more than our share of jerks in that cockpit, believe me!

Thanksgiving's Plan

November 20, 2007 0 Comments A+ a-

Chase and Casey, plus Jennifer, Liam and Brendyn will be here for dinner on Thursday Brother Mike, his wife Jackie and 75% of his kids will be here (Margo will be doing an annual soccer event in Palm Springs again this year.) Jackie's sister, Judy and her two kidlets will be here, too.

Norm is going to visit friends in London. His new job at the Pentagon has kept him here all year, and his only travels have been to see his Dad, when he was hospitalized. So, he can go to London without taking many days off off the Thanskgiving weekend.

He may be the smart one, you know!

Dinner menu looks like this:
Turkey
Dressing (may do two kinds, one with pecans and apples, one plain for the kiddies.)
mashed potatoes and gravy
mixed greens salad
green bean casserole (2 versions--one without soy sauce and with cheese, as requested by Jennifer)
sweet potato casserole (courtesy of Jackie)
Watergate salad (requested by Casey)
cranberry-pineapple salad (to be made by Casey)
Apple pie a la mode with the famous dulce de leche
Pecan Pie

I think I have to kick up my work out a bit!

I Can See Clearly Now

For the first time in 39 years, 2 months and 29 days--I am not dependent on my glasses or contact lenses! I had laser eye surgery yesterday--and a follow up appointment this morning has me at 20/20 with both eyes...expected to get even better over the next few months! Amazing!

I just do not have the words to express how this feels for me--but, miraculous is a good start.

Almost there!

Shelby sleeping the crew room in Miami--we arrived from Buenos Aires at 5 a.m.this morning. Now waiting for our flights to go home.

This message was sent from my cell phone.

Caskets, Steaks, and Wine

November 10, 2007 0 Comments A+ a-

These are the kind of keys used in much of Buenos Aires--one opens our apartment building door, the other the front door of the apartment, and the third is to the safe deposit box in the apartment. We love these llaves so much, we stopped in a llave shop and in very broken Spanish, spoke with the owner, trying to explain that they were different than the keys in Los Estados Unidos. He understood and immediately pulled out a box of llave mistakes, and gave us both a hand full! I will hang mine on my work suitcase, sort of like bag charms that one sees in Europe.

We went for a bite to eat in our neighborhood--and I just wanted one of those little personal sized pizzas--and looking at the menu, choosing what I wanted, I chose jamon y acuitenas verde or, ham and green olives. This is how it was served! The green olives were whole and had the pits in them! I thought this was an anomaly, until we were in the mini-mercado (7-11 store) and saw frozen pizzas the exact same way!

On Friday, we hired a driver, Oscar, and a tour guide, Catalina or "Kate" as she asked us to call her. They took us all over the city--looking at each neighborhood--each having its' own distinct personality.

Kate was not a very good tour guide. She would point out a monument and tell us, "This is a very important monument for the people of Buenos Aires." We would say, something like, "why is it important?" She didn't know, apparently, and would answer us with "Yes, it is a very important monument, park, building, street....." whatever! It seems that everything in Buenos Aires is very important to the people...but our tour guide did not know why!

Our driver, Oscar, was very nice, and we were able to speak with him a bit. My Spanish is broken--I get my tenses mixed up--but I have been trying and having a lot of fun talking with people. They seem eager to use their English, and I am just as eager to use my Spanish. I have had a modicum of success and am pretty happy about it!!

Oscar, our driver.

Shelby outside the Cemetario Recoleta, where Eva Peron, and other important people from Buenos Aires, are buried.

Walking in this cemetary was like nothing I have ever seen before! Here is the description on Wikipedia:

"The cemetery contains many elaborate marble mausoleums, decorated with statues, in a wide variety of architectural styles. The entire cemetery is laid out in sections like city blocks, with wide tree-lined main walkways branching into sidewalks filled with mausoleums.

While many of the mausoleums are in fine shape and well-maintained, others have fallen into disrepair. Several can be found with broken glass, littered with rubbish, and on occasion you might find a mausoleum being used as a janitorial supply closet, with cleaning and maintenance products stored on top of coffins.

Each mausoleum bears the family name etched into the facade; brass or bronze plaques are added to the front for particular family members. La Recoleta is one of those cemeteries where the tradition of engraving a death date but no birth date has been maintained.

One interesting and unique aspect of La Recoleta is a colony of feral cats that resides within the gates. Although they can be spotted anytime, they tend to gather in groups of dozens near closing-time, when some locals feed them."

The little buildings--mausoleums--look like tiny houses built right next to each other--and in most, you can look in and see the caskets--some look like altars, others look like an afterthought--or not thought of at all.

This mausoleum has a glass "front door" and curtains hanging there.

I could reach in and touch this casket if I wanted to. (Key words: "IF I wanted to...")

These were behind glass, so--in much better shape....

One of the feral cats--so sweet, he wanted me to pet him and kept meowing and talking to me.

This one, I have named "Butch" because he was so mean!

La Boca--known for its' colorful streets!

We came back home to our apartment, and walked down to Matilda's to have a cocktail before dinner. At 7:30, we went to Anastasia's, a neighborhood restaurant for some lomo de bifesteak. We were the first to arrive, as they had just opened. Shelby kept looking for a menu in English--unless you are in the tourist area, I don't think we'll find any! Anyway, she studied and studied and we ordered wine while she studied. We both decided on the filet mignon--but they were out. Another waiter came by to help with the Spanish-English, and suggested the ojo de beef, which translates literally to the eye of the beef (cow.) Hoping not to get eyeballs on our plate (Hey! You never know!) we implored the waiter to explain the "ojo." It is the eye of the steak--like "ribeye!" Who knew!

(You know if we didn't ask, there would have been two eyeballs rolling around on our plates!!)

As it happened, it turned out to be a amazingly tasty and tender cut of beef--muy delicioso!

Dinner, which was a steak, salad, bread and two bottles of wine cost 105 pesos or roughly $31 for two..and it is no problemo to take your unfinished wine home with you!

I picked up some flowers for the apartment on the way home from dinner--these six Gerbera daisies for 15 pesos--about $5 USD.

Hola from Buenos Aires!

We both arrived into Miami early in the day yesterday--around noon--so we would be higher on the standby list for the First Class cabin. We got a cheap hotel room to have a place to chill and relax comfortably. If anyone ever tries to talk you into a cheap hotel room at the Days Inn North Miami Airport--do NOT fall for it. The hotel is close to the airport, but that is the only good thing about it. To call it a sh*thole is being kind. It reeks of smoke the moment you walk into the lobby. There may be a section of the population that rents the rooms by the hour--couldn't say for sure, though...I nabbed a sheet from the housekeepers cart to cover my bed so I could lay on it in relative cleanliness...the room was moldy and icky and Lord knows what was on the bedspreads!! (And, it looked so good from the web site!!)

Anyway, we had both gotten up early--Shel came from Charlotte, NC and I came from Dallas, so we both were up around 4:30 in the morning, so we needed naps. Slept a bit at the Dump Inn, then headed to the airport around 7 pm lat night.

We did have a nice flight last night--had a terrific Flight Attendant, Rick, in First Class--and two very tired ones that surely need to retire. One of them complained the whole time and did little and the other one just did little! Fortunately, Rick took very good care of us (and the 13 other people in his cabin!) Dinner was good, we both had a couple drinks with dinner then started watching the movie ("No Reservations" with Catherine Zeta-Jones) and promptly fell asleep.
\
Arrived in Buenos Aires around 7:30 this morning--did the immagracion thing, then proceeded to the salida (exit) which runs you right through the Duty Free Shop. Shel did some shopping (well, the Bailey's Irish Cream IS on sale there!)

We hired a remise (private taxi) to take us to our apartment, which is about a 40 minute drive into the city. Esteban, our driver was a hottie!! Que bueno!! There was little regard for the lanes on the road, and the driving was very chaotic--not just by Esteban, but everyone else on the road. It made Washington, DC traffic look very tame! I just had to look at the scenery, could not watch the driving--I would have put a hole in the floor of the car!

Settled into the apartment--it is very cute! Small, but both of us have our own bedroom and bath, and both have queen size beds. (In the apartment search, many had twin beds in the second bedroom or only one bathroom.) Anyway, it is very clean, and in a great place called Palermo near Las Heras Park and Avenida Santa Fe which has a lot of shops and stuff.

This is my bedroom.

This is our balcony, overlooking Las Heras Boulevard--Sante Fe Avenue is on the opposite side of the park.

Can you see the purple flowering trees at the park? There are many of these trees all over the city--they are beautiful!

More balcony views....it is very noisy with the traffic and busses and policia and their sirens...

A couple of billboards we saw today...

If we open the window in the kitchen, we can hear all the dogs barking. This city is in love with dogs, apparently! (Who isn't, besides me?? ) Anyway, we saw no less than 10 dog walkers with 8-10 dogs in their care--BIG dogs, too!

So, the dog walker walks the dogs then drops them off at the owners house...while he is dropping one dog off, the other dogs wait patiently for his return....

And, then they are off, again!

We walked around our neighborhood this afternoon for a bit. Found a Carrefour (grocery store chain) and picked up a few items. While there, we had security guards following us everywhere--thinking they were being surreptitious--but, they weren't. They were watching us because we were picking up all the different things in an Argentine grocery store that we don't see in US stores. Plus, we were trying to figure out what some of the stuff was...

We discovered a new drug--dulce de leche! Many of my family and friends will be getting this for Christmas--it is muy bueno y fantastico!

More purple trees...

I like the palm trees in the middle of the "regular" trees....
My new amigo, Juan at the corner cheese/meat/wine shop--he is very sweet and wanted to practice his English with us--and we tried our Espanol with him!

Tomorrow, we plan to go to Calle Florida do a little shopping, as well as a City Tour just to get a layout of the city. Saturday, we are going to the market at Recoleta and Sunday--the "flea" market at San Telmo. Monday, hopefully, we'll go see Gustavo--recommended by our friend Robyn-- and get our hair cut and colored.
