Proud Mama

Casey, my 21 year old daughter, is a full-time college student. She also works almost full-time for a hotel as a waitress, hostess, and doing room service. She decided to work for a sister property at the oceanfront to see how she liked dealing with the tourists, instead of the business guests she's been working with for the last 4 years

Yesterday was her first day at the beach property, and she ended up working a double shift. The restaurant closed at 10 p.m. last night, and while they were cleaning up, a family walked in and asked if they were open. Casey said they were not, and the Mom of the family made a comment--something to the effect of "just wanting to get the kids something to eat, they are pretty hungry."

Casey said "Hang on, I'll be right back." She went into the kitchen and made two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and grabbed a couple bags of potato chips to give to the kids. The parents were thrilled when she returned!

At the same time, there appeared several more people at the restaurant door, looking for something to eat. Casey heard one of them say "distressed passengers" and she sprung into action.

Apparently, a Delta flight from Atlanta (ATL) to New York City (LGA) had smoke in the cabin and the flight diverted to Norfolk, VA (ORF). The passengers were put on a bus and sent to the hotel to spend the night, until Delta could get them out the next day.

Casey and the rest of the exhausted employees in the kitchen and dining room re-opened the restaurant for these passengers and made sure they all got a bite to eat before they went to bed.

How many times have you shown up at a store 10 minutes before closing time, and they tell you it's closed already? I see that kind of crap all the time! They didn't have to do any of what they did--there was no manager telling them what to do. They just did. Okay, she didn't donate a kidney--but, I am still very proud of her actions and those of her colleagues.

Ramblings from my camera

We had friends visiting last week, and in one of the Washington, DC souvenir shops, I saw this magnetic Obama Mix and Match wardrobe! Love the super hero outfit! And, I wonder if his abs really look like that.....

















They didn't have a Sarah Palin mix and match wardrobe--but her face was plastered on a gazillion other things....






Miss Emmie made herself comfortable in a box I was going to put into the trash....
Skinny Minnie, I mean my protein powder, soy bean eatin' sister Donna, actually ordered that chocolate dessert thing on the left. Mine was a creme brulee. We met in Richmond, VA (halfway between my house in Alexandria and hers in Virginia Beach) for lunch and a little shopping.





My Dad arrived from San Antonio last night to be with me through this surgery. This is the image of him I grew up with---drinking his coffee and reading the morning paper.

Only one word for the lilies Casey sent me: glorious!

Look at that big ol' yawn! This is the kind of day I hope to have today!
My surgery is tomorrow...I will be out of commission for a bit. Since my cat doesn't do a very good job of it, I have asked my sister to be my Guest Blogger and update everyone on things.

The doorbell rang last week, and I was surprised with these gorgeous lilies.








But, the tears came when I read the card and saw who the flowers were from: my 20 year old daughter, Casey Claire.

On the card, Casey quotes an old Joshua Kadison song, "Beautiful In My Eyes, " that I just love. My favorite line is "and the passing years will show that you will always grow ever more beautiful in my eyes."


A phenomenal young woman, Casey reminds me of another quote, this one from Maya Angelou: “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”


Today, as you can tell, I am bursting with pride!


*When Casey was a a toddler/pre-schooler....she had a lisp. When someone would ask what her name was, she would reply "CA-thee Cwaire." And, she is always CA-thee Cwaire to me!!

Paris, again!

So, Casey and I headed to Paris a couple of weeks ago. Our flight from Boston had over a hundred seats available, and we sat in Business Class. Ni-ice! We took the Air France bus to get to our hotel , which was across the street from the Place d'Italie Metro. (Casey works for a major hotel chain and we used her discount for the room: 5 nights for about $200...suh-weet! It's the perfect part-time job for a Flight Attendant--matches our flight bennies!))

It was cool and overcast with bouts of rain. It was cooler in Paris than it was in Alaska when I was there! Our first day there, after getting settled in the hotel and having a nap, we explored our little neighborhood and got a pizza to eat and found a grocery store. The next morning, we headed up towards the tourist area of the Latin Quarter. We walked, it rained, we stopped at Starbucks, and waited for it to subside. We had a lovely day, but walked a total of 7 hours that day! By the time we got back to the hotel, we were beat!

After determining that a chocolate crepe in Paris contains ZERO calories, we indulged!
Having never done it before, we took the bateau down the Seine for a night view of all the tourist hot spots. Glad we had our jackets, because it was chilly! The same time last year when we were there was in the middle of a heat wave!
The next day, we went to Disneyland Paris! It was not crowded, probably because of the rain. It stopped and we enjoyed the day there. We did Alice's Labyrinth (that was fun, actually!) and rode Space Mountain--front car after only a 10 minute wait! That ride was much better than the Space Mountain in Orlando! (Or, could it have been because I was in the front car??)

Casey's Hot Dog joint on Main Street

Bonjour, y'all!

My daughter, Casey and I are planning a trip to Paris at the end of the month. I was going to go to San Antonio to see my Dad--but my sister is trying to go on frequent flyer miles, and won't be able to go until August. So, I have worked all these days in July for a big block of time off--and now I want to go! Casey and me in Paris, July 2006 Then, Paris. I was there this time last year with both my daughters, Jennifer and Casey. Miss Casey was in a bad mood the entire trip. She said she wanted to make it up to me. (awwww!) I love this picture of Casey--we splurged on a chocolate tart with real gold leaf on it!
I love Paris--it is my favorite city to just hang out in. I don't need to go to the Eiffel Tower again, or Notre Dame--I just like to walk in the different neighborhoods, find a cool cafe and just hang out. I like finding neat little shops, checking out the grocery stores--buying fresh fruit and cheese. The fruit the vendors display there is amazing--like it is fresh from the farm. (DUH! It probably IS fresh from a farm!) Last year, we walked up to a shop on Rue Mouffetard and saw some beautiful red strawberries.
But, we could smell them before we saw them!
We were in Paris for July 14--which is Bastille Day. The fireworks were amazing--we had the best view!
