Delta Airlines is hiring Flight Attendants

Delta Airlines is hiring Flight Attendants.  This is big--no legacy carrier has hired for some time now.  You don't have to be LOD (Language of Destination) as they are also hiring non bi-lingual people, too.  (I tried to convince my Training Supervisor that I was bi-lingual since I speak Southern, but she was having no part of that!)

Anyway, they are also hiring speakers, specifically those that speak:

Arabic
Cantonese
Czech
Danish
Dutch
French
German
Greek
Hebrew
Hungarian
Italian
Japanese
Portuguese
Spanish
Swedish

So, come "Fly the Friendly Skies."  Um, no...it's "Something Special in the AAir."  Oh, wait, it's "We Love to Fly, and It Shows!"  And, keep me posted!

Scenes from the Bahnhofstrasse

The Voice called and gave me my assignment--and it wasn't the one I wanted.  On the List that day, was a five day trip that looks like this: work one leg down to Sao Paulo (GRU), layover 25 hours.  After that,  work a "turn" to Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and back, layover for another 25 hours.  On the last day, fly home.  Hanging out in the Land of Caipirinhas sounded not only delicious to me, but a break from the scorching summer heat that we've had here in Washington, DC.

Lurch
"Please, oh, please, oh, please let me have the Sao Paulo trip!" I thought to myself as the phone rang and Caller ID showed that it was the Crew Desk calling.  "Flight Attendant Blondie, this is Lurch at the Crew Desk.  I have your trip for you..."  Holding the phone tentatively and trembling with fear that my trip was going to be a "turn" to Raleigh (RDU) and back, (two flights that take less total time than it takes me to drive to work...) "Yes..."

"Your trip is ID 5017 departing at...with a layover in....Zurich."

My eyes open wide...I can barely make out the words, "thank you" and hang up the phone.

Woohoo!  I've never been to Zurich (ZRH)!  I am always up for a new adventure.  Sao Paulo, Schmao Paulo...I dropped that wish like a hot potato.  (When it comes to trips, I have no loyalties!)

I called my SuperHeroHusband, who is serving in a faraway land...and since I was going to be there on a weekend, he said would take the train down to ZRH and spend the layover with me!

My first view of the Alps!

Lake Zurich

We flew all night and arrived early in the morning.  I worked Business Galley with two great guys, Stephan and Roger.  (Heather, Stephan says hello!)   Once in my hotel room, I crashed and slept for a few hours.  Norm arrived early in the afternoon--and announced that it was too hot outside, so I rolled over and went back to sleep.

Norm's beer, served with a pretzel!

A bit later, we set out for a beer and dinner, and walked along the river over to the Bahnhofstrasse toward Lake Zurich. The Bahnhofstrasse is loaded with high-end shops, and fortunately for my husband, everything was closed--it was Switzerland's National Day.

Dinner was brats and sauerkraut and potatoes and delicious!

It was one of the best layovers I've ever had--and the first one I've spent with my husband.  We just enjoyed being together in this beautiful and friendly city.

Hopefully Lurch will call with another good trip later this week!  Cross your fingers for me, please!

767 Crew Rest

August 17, 2010 0 Comments A+ a-

A while back I took you on a tour of a Boeing 777, which included pictures of the lower lobe crew rest. Fancy digs on that 777, right?

Here is the ugly stepsister crew rest on a Boeing 767.  It consists of four coach seats that have been placed in the Business cabin, across from the galley, with a heavy curtain that surrounds them.  On flights scheduled for 8 hours or more, our contract provides for a rest period, so the seats are not sold to passengers.  On flights scheduled for less than 8 hours, the seats are sold as coach seats (without the curtain around them, of course!) and the passengers that end up sitting there are usually surprised that we treat them as if they were Business Class passengers (drinks, meals, amenity kits, etc.)

After all the meal services are concluded in each cabin, you might see some of the Flight Attendants scrambling to get themselves something to eat, while one of us will unfold the heavy curtain that is stowed behind the seats of the crew rest.  Scarfing down a quick bite, the four Flight Attendants then hurry over to the seats to 'claim' the one they want.  Pillows and blankets from the overhead compartment are situated just right as the Flight Attendants then hurry to get situated into the crew rest seats.  The break is timed, so everyone is trying to get settled in as quickly as possible.

There are two rows of two seats each for the crew rest.  This photo shows my view from the second row of the rest area, with a safety card finagled into place to darken the "Fasten Seatbelt/No Smoking" light.

The back two seats are right up against a lavatory...so, if you can't get to a deep sleep (and really, who can?) you hear the swooooosh of a toilet flushing for your entire break.  For those that have a hard time sleeping in crew rest (moi, for example) that rest break can be maddening.  Can't sleep, then just doze off and swooooosh...okay, back to being wide awake...now dozing off...swooooosh!  Sometimes, I'll listen to my iPod, other times I use earplugs...both help to diminish the sounds.  But, not enough.

Some people can fall asleep quickly when they go into crew rest...how do I know?  The snoring, of course!

The length  of time for crew rest is determined by the Purser...and the length of the flight.  But, it never fails...just as I am really falling asleep, the scratching sound of Velcro being torn apart wakes me up.  The smiling face of a fellow Flight Attendant who has opened the sealed curtain to quietly let us know that our time is up, and we have to get up, so the other Flight Attendants can take their break.

And, usually that Flight Attendant has made fresh coffee for us!

Unusual ways to quit your job...

August 10, 2010 0 Comments A+ a-

By now, I'm sure you heard about the jetBlue Flight Attendant who popped a slide on an airplane door on his way out to the unemployment line.

I found this online and had to share it--it's the girl who quit her job on a dry erase board!  Hilarious!

You're welcome!

**Update: Carol over at Middle-Aged Diva tells me the girl with the dry erase board is a hoax.  Bummer!

Really, people???

August 05, 2010 1 Comments A+ a-

After landing yesterday, a United Airlines 767 coming from London (LHR) was evacuated at Chicago's O'Hare (ORD).  There was a fire in the landing gear of the plane after it landed.  The Flight Attendants deployed the slides and evacuated almost everyone--at some point, the fire was extinguished and it was no longer necessary to continue the evacuation.

So, here's a short cell phone video.  And, notice the people bringing their stuff out with them.  Really, people?<rolleyes>
