Xintiandi and shopping

May 28, 2009 6 Comments A+ a-

One of the restaurants our Purser, Barbara recommended was a place called 1221. Authentic Shanghainese food, and seemingly catering to Westerners, we enjoyed a great meal there.

Poured from a beautiful brass teapot with a three foot long spout, this was the cup of tea served when we arrived--I thought it was very pretty !

At one of the markets we shopped at, this young lady was playing beautiful music on this instrument. Take a listen...

We shopped a lot at the Pearl Market, and met Laura, who has a shop there. Laura makes some beautiful pieces, and welcomes airline crews in her shop. She even has an airplane picture hanging up in her shop! We were there two days in a row and the place was packed with Flight Attendants and Pilots buying, designing and just catching up with their friends in her shop.

With bottles of water, soda and Suntory beer available, Laura's place was like "Cheers"- where everybody knows your name!

Laura had this piece in her shop-made of coral and pearls, as well as one made just like it with turquoise and pearls--just beautiful. These pieces sold for, I think, around $20 each!

This was a custom piece she made.

The jewelry can be made while you wait...

We found ourselves going to Xintiandi a couple of times--a really nice upscale shopping area in the French Concession.

The next day, we met some people who were staying in our hotel. From Oklahoma and working on a solar power project, they had been living there already for the last two months, and had just found out they would be there another month. They invited us to join them for dinner, since we were all going to the same place--Xintiandi. We sat outdoors, the weather was fantastic and we all ended up having a great time, with mucho wine consumed.

Across from the restaurant is one of the torches carried for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The next afternoon, we went back to KABB, and our waitress, More, recognized us from the night before. She was so friendly and sweet and I loved talking with her! She is the kind of person you wish you had more time to get to know.

More introduced us to Richard, one of the managers there. He was great to talk with and again, a person you could have yakked with all day long!

Mmmmmmm! Lunch was dee-lish! These are beef kabobs (pronounced kababas over there!)

My last view of Xintiandi--as we were leaving, this huge dog, named John, was sitting at the table with his owners. I just loved his shoes!
I'm looking forward to an opportunity to work a trip to Shanghai--but, can't wait until Norm and I can go there! It was different, open, and accommodating, with some of the friendliest people I've ever met, and sights, sounds and smells we don't have here in the US.

'tater chips

I know--it's weird. Okay--I'm weird. I love grocery stores in other countries. And what I find myself most interested in is the potato chips. Specifically, the Lay's Potato Chips and all the different flavors that are available in other countries, but are not available here. Here is a sampling of the offerings available in Shanghai:

Italian Red Meat Sauce

Cucumber

Blueberry. Sweet and salty. I didn't care for them.

Texas Grilled BBQ

Lime

Mexican Tomato Chicken (not too bad...)

My favorite is good ol' Salt and Vinegar--what's YOUR favorite flavor?

Shanghai-sights and tastes

May 27, 2009 2 Comments A+ a-

Before we left for Shanghai, we were able to visit with a couple of our friends in Chicago. My friend and former Inflight Manager, Deb and her new baby came by the hotel. Five months old, Rio is beautiful and precious with her long blonde hair and squishy legs. When she fell asleep in my arms, I just wanted to eat her up! I ♥ Rio!

One of my favorite pilots and good friend from my former airline, Gary, stopped by for hugs and hellos before we boarded for our flight.

In addition to the Arrival card we had to fill out for Immigration into China, we also had to fill out the "Health Declaration" card, which is part of the Chinese response to the aporkalypse. I like this question: "Have you had close contact with pig within the past 1 week?" (Oh, the jokes I could insert here...!)

On arrival into Shanghai, these guys (or gals, who could tell?) came onboard the aircraft with a thermometer. (Well, I think it was a thermometer!) They pointed the gun thingee at your forehead and it displayed a series of four dots on your skin. Lasting a mere 2 seconds for each person, they cleared our airplane quite quickly.

We found our driver relatively quickly and headed to our apartment near downtown. Two bedrooms, two bath, with a cooked-to-order breakfast buffet and Internet for about $65 a night each. Not bad--huh?

We actually had the three bedroom apartment--where the smaller bedroom was made into a computer room. Some websites were blocked, apparently by the government. I was unable to access my blog to post anything--I sent my sister an e-mail so she could post the last post for me. Yeah, I know, I am probably a threat to the Chinese government... (rolleyes!)

The other dissident website I was unable to access there was Verizon Wireless. Go figure!

The thing I enjoyed the most while we were there was a walk around our colorful neighborhood. I loved this restaurant with the fresh seafood right in front of it. Eel, urchin, shrimp, or octopus--take your pick!

The area was filled with colorful lanterns and decorations. At night, there were brightly-hued lights that twinkled for the street festival.

There were street vendors everywhere--many of them selling fresh fruit. This man had fresh cherries and these delicious, juicy, sweet, tart, strawberry tasting things:

And these--which when opened, revealed a very soft, sweet white segmented fruit--divinely delectable!

Next post--Xintiandi, jewelry and potato chips!

Shang-Wow!

Cherie and I flew over from Chicago to Shanghai--a 14 hour flight yesterday. And we arrived tomorrow--or something like that--when we crossed the International Dateline. We were able to score First Class seats on the 747--suh-weet!

Our Flight Attendants were just amazing, graceful and elegant! The Purser, Barbara, has been doing this Shanghai trip for the last four years, and she was more than willing to share her knowledge of where to go to eat and shop. She wrote a big list for us, complete with maps, names of people to see, and which shops do not bargain and which ones do.

We checked into our hotel--which is actually a two bedroom, two bath apartment--it is just lovely. And inexpensive. (Me likey cheap!) It is also in a great location and the really nice breakfast buffet is included. Yesterday, after we settled in, we walked around and bought a Burberry shirt for $6 US. Nice that the Burberry folks sell their stuff so inexpensively here, huh? ;)

This morning we grabbed a cab to Nanjing Road--to the 580 building. This place makes the Straw Market in Nassau, Bahamas look like a church picnic! The vendors are extremely interested in your shopping at their stall. Did I say extremely interested? They practically drag you into their shops...and, if you mention you are looking for something, one of them will drag you up the stairs to a friend's shop. There, the magic door at the back of the stall opens so you can exam the knock-off Coach, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Chanel--you name it, they have it. And, oh! The deals to be made! EVERYthing is negotiable. And just when I offer a lowball price I offer that I expect to be rejected, the agree to it and WHAM! I am the owner of something I had not intended to buy. These people are pros...and I must look like a big fool!

We are heading over to Xian Dao Ti (or something like that!) to see what is there--it came highly recommended by Barbara. I cannot wait to see what is in store for us there! I have to make sure to turn off the neon sign on my forehead that flashes "SUCKER"!

See, it's not just me!

Sara over at The Flying Pinto, just posted about shower caps for the remote control in your hotel room. And, she linked to this Gadling post, about the not-so-cleanliness of the aforementioned remote controls.

I feel vindicated after my last post! All the creepiness that I feel in a hotel room is rooted in truth--it's not just me!

Just back from a Virginia Beach weekend with my kiddos and the Most Amazing Child on the Planet. I'll post pics in the next couple of days...in the meantime, I'm off for one last hurrah before returning to the friendly skies on June 1st. Tomorrow, I am flying to Chicago and will meet up with my friend Cherie. Then, it's off to Shanghai on Wednesday.

Secret hotel habits....

May 11, 2009 6 Comments A+ a-

Last year, you may have caught this video of how housekeepers in hotels were not cleaning the glasses. Or this one...or this one...just type in "dirty hotel" into You Tube, and you'll find a plethora of stuff you really didn't want to know!

Even before these videos came to light, Flight Attendants have had their own suspicions about hotel rooms. Ask any one of us, and I'm sure you'll find a variety of hotel room cleaning behaviors, before the uniform even gets put on the hanger and into the closet for the night.

Especially me! But, it starts on the airplane.

My cuticles look like hell between manicures. Why? Because I am washing my hands so often and they are overly dry because of the cheap soap in the lavatory and antibacterial hand wash I use. Nothing personal, but, I encounter a lot of funk on an airplane, and I want as little of it as possible! Notice when a Flight Attendant comes out of the lav, she (okay, me!) generally is opening the door with a paper towel in her hand, then holding the door open with her leg, then reaching over and disposing of the paper towel in the lav trash, her hands never touching the door. We've all seen what some passengers (not you, of course!) leave behind in the lav and on the aircraft, and many times it is disgusting.

Did I tell you about the time I found a full barf bag (sick sack) left in the seat back pocket while tidying the aircraft between flights? And, that it was still warm? Really, what a nice surprise...not! The appropriate way to handle that, and save embarrassment would have been to tell me as you exited the aircraft "I was not feeling well and I was sitting in 17B." We'd understand, and have the appropriate equipment (gloves, anyone?) when we or the cleaners went back to take care of it.

Did I tell you abou the uncapped, used insulin needle left in the seatback pocket? Or the innumerous soiled diapers? Rarely will you find a Flight Attendant who would blindly put her hands into the seatback pocket--we never know what we are going to find in there! (And, neither do you, so open as wide as you can and look before you stick you hands in there, please!)

Have I told you about how teenagers (especially when traveling in groups and looking cool is a high priority) are able to contort their bodies so that their feet are on the tray table? Socked or bare--it doesn't matter. They claim that it's comfortable. (I then claim that my airline has a policy against it, so get those feet off the traytable, now, please.) Or, how about the parents who change their babies on the tray table instead of the changing table in the lav? Yep, the same table you eat your lunch on the next flight. And, no, they aren't cleaned between flights.

And, all those people with behaviors I am not particularly fond of, stay in hotels. So, I have come to assume that if they do these behaviors in public, then it is probably worse in private. As in a private hotel room.

Thus, my secret habits in a hotel have been honed over the years.

I start with the carpet--before I kick my high heels off, I have already pulled from my suitcase, my little footies. I own a ton of these footies--I pick 'em up at Costco. As I peel out of my pantyhose, I do not let my toes touch the carpet until I get it covered with a footie. Then the next footie goes on...

It is incredible how dirty they are after the end of trip--the footies I have been wearing over the years are permanently stained. I have soaked 'em, used Oxiclean, Shout and any combination of stuff I thought would help--nada! And it all came from hotel carpets. No, I do not let my bare feet touch 'em! No way, no how!

Feet safely ensconced, comfy clothes on, it's on to the Clorox Wipes. I wipe down the remote control. That's not really true--I practically scrub it down! No telling what sort of critters are on that! Then it's the handles--door handle, refrigerator (if there's one) bathroom door knob, and the toilet handle. A fresh wipe for the toilet seat--it gets its' own. I usually don't use the clock radio or telephone in a hotel, but if I did, you can bet I'd wipe it down!

Then, it's a towel on the seat of the desk chair--someone may have been sitting there with no clothes on and, well...no, thank you! Just a little barrier makes me feel better...

At my last airline, I was on the Hotel Committee for our Union....the stories I heard about the beds would turn your head. Fortunately, I never ran into finding someone's underwear between the sheets when I crawled into the bed....or, hairs on the sheets, or other stuff like that. Or bedbugs. But, I took many reports about Flight Attendants and Pilots that did. Many Flight Attendants pull the bedspread off the bed as soon as they get into the room. I don't do that, but I do make sure the sheets are the only part of the bedding that my body touches. Ever. And, of course, the footies go back on when I get out of bed!

After seeing those videos last year, You can bet I don't drink out of those glasses, either. Plastic covered cups, if any, are what I use. (Generally I have bottled water with me...)

And that's about it. Norm thinks I'm a whack job for doing all this. He welcomes any opportunity to build up his immunity system. While I don't agree with his plan, maybe I should just stay off of You Tube?

Love this picture! Jennifer and family friend Wes, at the Richmond NASCAR race. Her comment on her MySpace page was "Why do I always end up in the Smoking Section. It's a nasty frickin' habit!" (Those are earplugs in her nose!)

I go back to work on June 1st. The plan for the rest of May is Virginia Beach next weekend to hang with Brendyn while his Mom goes to the Outer Banks with girlfriends. Shanghai on the 19th, then trying on my uniform skirt to make sure it still fits!
